2008 DUKE'S OCEANFEST SURFBOARD WATER POLO TOURNAMENT TO MOVE
TO DUKE KAHANAMOKU LAGOON

Event organizers of the 2008 Duke's OceanFest announced today that this year's FINIS SurfPolo Tournament will be held on Sunday, August 24, at the recently renovated Duke Kahanamoku Lagoon at the Hilton Hawaiian Village Beach Resort and Spa.

"We are excited that this year's tournament will take place at the Duke Kahanamoku Lagoon, which has undergone a major rejuvenation, making it an ideal venue for this long-lost sport," said Bob Hampton, President of Waikiki Beach Activities, the company that operates the beach and pool concessions for the Hilton Hawaiian Village.

SurfPolo was played in Waikiki in the War Memorial Natatorium and along the ocean in front of Waikiki hotels in the 1930's and 1940's. The game originated in Waikiki when the Kahanamoku brothers and other beachboys began playing water polo on surfboards. The rules of waterpolo apply, and all players, including the goalie, must be on surf boards when handling the ball.


The week long OceanFest event honors the birthday of Duke Kahanamoku, Hawaii's best known waterman and ambassador of Aloha. Proceeds from the event go to the Outrigger Duke Kahanamoku Foundation which provides scholarships to young people and organizations in Hawaii that foster and promote the spirit of Duke Kahanamoku's legacy.

The 2008 Duke's SurfPolo Tournament is presented by FINIS, the world leader in technical swimming development, and is sponsored by XCEL Wetsuits, Waikiki Beach Activities, and the Hilton Hawaiian Village Beach Resort and Spa.
